John King LPC, therapist for men and women in Grand Rapids

At GR Therapy Collective, we’re proud to have clinicians who bring both skill and heart to their work. John King, LPC is one of those therapists who truly meets clients where they are—especially men navigating stress, relationships, and life transitions.

A Passion Born from Real-World Experience

John’s path to becoming a counselor began in an Appalachian steel town during college. He saw firsthand how emotional pain—grief, poverty, and the ripple effects of addiction—often went untreated. “I realized I wanted to work with people on the unseen issues they carried,” he says. That combination of compassion, curiosity, and personal experience laid the foundation for the work he does today.

Helping Men Find Their Voice and Confidence

John specializes in men’s counseling in Grand Rapids, focusing on issues like relationship stress, anger, and feeling underappreciated. “Many men come to therapy not because they’re broken, but because they want to understand themselves and their relationships better,” John explains.

He works with individuals and couples—often guiding clients through affair recovery, communication challenges, and building emotional tools that strengthen connection. His sessions are down-to-earth, straightforward, and centered on creating real, sustainable change.

A Practical, Tools-Focused Approach

John’s style is even-keeled and relationally focused. Clients describe feeling understood and accepted—even when sharing mistakes or uncertainty. He combines Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and the Gottman Method for couples to help clients practice skills that extend far beyond the therapy room.

“Counseling shouldn’t be mysterious,” John says. “I want clients to leave each session with specific tools to resolve or manage the issue at hand.”

What Clients Can Expect

Sessions with John are collaborative and practical. Whether working through anger, relationship repair, or everyday stress, clients are encouraged to apply what they learn between sessions. “Therapy is an active process,” John adds. “It’s about building habits that make you stronger, more flexible, and more connected.”

Many clients notice meaningful progress within just a few sessions—a reflection of John’s ability to blend compassion with action.

Life in Grand Rapids

New to the area, John and his wife are enjoying exploring all that Grand Rapids has to offer—from cozy coffee shops to fall walks with their dog. “It already feels like home,” he says.

When he’s not in the office, you’ll find him making music, watching racing, or kayaking Michigan’s scenic waters.
